Preparing Lawns and Gardens for Spring
Welcome spring and the warmth it provides. It's time to give your lawn and garden some attention after the cold and snowy winter. With the right steps, you can prepare your lawn and garden for a vibrant spring season.

Winter storms, fallen leaves, and ice can leave a layer of debris on your lawn and garden. The first step is to clear it away. Raking any fallen leaves and clearing downed twigs and branches is a great place to start. Remove dead plant matter and weeds from your garden beds. Remember to compost or use debris for mulch.
Spring is the perfect time to assess the health of your perennial plants, trees, and shrubs. Pruning them will not only enhance their shape but also encourage healthy growth. Prune dead or damaged branches to prevent disease and promote improved airflow. Cutting back perennials will encourage new growth and increase vibrant blooms. Look for signs of pest or fungal diseases especially on woody plants and roses. Treat with appropriate pest control.
After a long winter, your lawn may be compacted from snow and ice. Aerating your lawn is essential to improving air circulation, water absorption, and nutrient flow to the roots to promote a lush green lawn.
Spring is the ideal time to feed your lawn and garden with the nutrients they need to kickstart the growing season. Fertilizing in early spring helps to replenish nutrients that may have been depleted over the winter months. Be sure to choose a fertilizer designed for early spring application.
If you notice areas where the grass has died off, it is time to reseed. This will help to fill in gaps and restore your lawn’s appearance. Select a grass seed that matches the type of grass in your lawn and appropriate for growing conditions. After loosening the top layer of soil, sprinkle grass seed evenly over the bare spots and lightly cover with soil or compost and water gently.

Your garden beds will need some attention to improve soil structure and fertility. Consider adding compost or organic matter into the garden especially if the soil is heavy in clay or sand. This will help create the best environment for your plants. Don’t forget to add mulch to help suppress weeds, conserve moisture and regulate the soil temperature.
Plan ahead for what you’d like to grow in your garden. Some vegetables like peas/lettuce thrive in cooler temps so planting in early spring is a good idea. Many flowers bloom early in the season. Primroses and pansies can add early spring colour after a dull winter.
Watch for changes in weather. Spring can bring cold snaps and heavy rains. Water wisely and protect newly sprouted roots and tender plants when the temperature drops.
Taking the time now to care for your outdoor spaces will reward you with healthy, beautiful plants and a vibrant lawn to enjoy all season long.
